It took us some months to come up with a concept that might achieve the desired effect and this is the result: A huge Ninepatch “block” made up of nine small, framed quilts whose (machine quilted) quilt lines seem to travel across the space between the individual blocks... ... we decided to create a needle book. Our version is really easy to make, and extremely useful. Our outer cover is a work sample left over from the picture series made for “Crazy Quilting by Hand”, but there is a great variety of other options: a piece of fabric with an interesting pattern, an orphan block, a Confetti picture and much, much more... For a lot of people, quilt challenges are a lot of fun. For Jutta, they are not. They have rules and they have a deadline. Both things seem to put an immediate stop to any creative flow which might have been there before.

But still, peer pressure can be quite persuasive. So when a lot of her friends signed up for the 2009 Fabric Challenge, she did likewise. Two very different flowery prints had to be used in a small textile object which should measure no more than 50 cm (ca. 20”) square at each side.... (25 February 2011)
