Layered Leaves I (Book Cover)

It is widely acknowledged in the quilting world that keeping a sketchbook is a very good idea. In the best case, this sketchbook travels with you everywhere and is the last thing you “speak” to in the evening and the first to be told about your dreams when you wake up in the morning. It is evident that a confidante of such importance must be adequately dressed.

Feeling autumn already creeping up on us from every angle, we thought that falling leaves would be a very nice motif for our book cover. But as we are still a little reluctant to accept that summer is preparing for its final curtain of this year, we chose leaves in funky colours and gave them an interesting and multi-facetted environment.

The result is a surface which doesn’t reveal all its layers at once. The colour play fools the eye of the onlooker and only at second glance is it evident that the background fabric is actually black... (18 August 2011)

Firmament Block

Firmament Block

The Firmament block is neither complicated nor difficult to sew. It just has a lot of pieces (a total of 68 and all triangles with exception of the four black squares) which makes it perfect for very scrappy quilts. You can place scraps entirely at random, but we suggest that you help "coincidence" along a little to prevent scraps of similar colours congregating. Such colour blobs tend to stick out in a scrap quilt which is otherwise uniform in its diversity... (14 June 2011)

Firmament

Firmament

The design for the Firmament quilt was created during a particularly boring meeting at one of our former employers which, as usual, didn’t have any useful outcome. Except of course the Firmament blocks and quilt setting!

The quilt block and the quilt are wonderful for using up a huge quantity of scraps. This version of the quilt uses up a total of 1,288 multicoloured half square triangles, 912 background half square triangles and 240 half square triangles and 148 squares in black... (12 June 2011)

Labyrinth

Labyrinth

Scraps have played a prominent role here at Quilt around the World almost from the very beginning. You only have to read the articles in the Scrap Management book (A book at Quilt around the World is a set of instructions with its own table of contents. Most books can be found in the projects section, but most articles in the technique section are also organized as books.) and you’ll know that we are really passionate about really small shapes cut from leftovers “normal” people would probably throw away... Needle Book

Needle Book

... we decided to create a needle book. Our version is really easy to make, and extremely useful. Our outer cover is a work sample left over from the picture series made for “Crazy Quilting by Hand”, but there is a great variety of other options: a piece of fabric with an interesting pattern, an orphan block, a Confetti picture and much, much more...
