Jen Jones and the Welsh Quilt Centre

Jen Jones and the Welsh Quilt Centre

... We met Jen at the Welsh Quilt Centre in Lampeter, a gallery dedicated to Welsh quilts and founded by Jen and her husband Roger Clive-Powell. Jen and Roger, an architect specializing in the restoration and conservation of old buildings, bought the almost derelict Lampeter town hall and have restored it. It opened its doors in 2009 and houses changing exhibitions of Welsh quilts taken from Jen’s extensive collection... (26 August 2011)

Feather Swag

Feather Swag

We included this challenging feather swag for advanced hand quilters. Feathers are a challenge for every quilter, no matter how much or little experience she or he has, simply because they are a lot of work and require patience and endurance. The feather swag for the Martha Quilt is particularly demanding because the border is narrow. The pattern becomes very intricate and requires small and even stitches... (26 July 2011)

Oval with Crosshatch Background

Although the line drawing of Martha Washington for which this quilting pattern was conceived is not a silhouette, we thought that a classical oval frame on an unobtrusive, but elegant background would be the best solution here... (24 July 2011)

Martha-Quilt

Martha-Quilt

The Martha-Quilt is the result of an inspirational process which started with the May block of the American Impressions BOM series. That block triggered a bonus block with Martha Washington’s portrait as a line embroidery motif. And the bonus block demanded an attractive setting so as not to join other solo blocks in the orphan block container awaiting an uncertain future.

The personality of Martha Washington herself also boosted motivation for this quilt. Her biography is an interesting and very instructive read and we thought that this proud and brave Virginian more than deserved this small tribute in cloth... (20 July 2011)

Seagreen, or: How to Create a Handquilting Sampler

Seagreen

The idea for this project was born while contemplating the many beautiful quilting stencils we have acquired over the years. We have always considered quilting stencils a fairly inoffensive item on a quilter’s shopping list: Quilting stencils are comparatively inexpensive, very durable and can be used for years and years.

However, very often a shop-bought quilting stencil just doesn’t fit a new quilt’s requirements exactly and “own designs” take centre stage. Of course, being creative is a good thing, but what about all those lovely patterns sitting around quietly waiting to be used... (21 June 2011)

Quilting the SommerSonnenStrahlen Quilt

Sunflower Quilting Stencil

Designwise, quilting the SommerSonnenStrahlen was a fairly easy business for us as this time, we didn’t create an original quilt design. There are so many beautiful quilting stencils on the market that we thought this would be permissible for a change... (13 June 2011)
