Strips

As you might have read in our newsletter, Jutta was invited to participate in the 2nd Ateliertage Waldtrudering, an exhibtion organized by a local group of artists in the Munich district of Waldtrudering. All of the artists opened their workrooms to show their latest artwork. Interested visitors could stroll through the neighbourhood and drop in to get to know the artists in person and watch them at work. 

The “Konkret I” cushion was inspired by the vanguard design concepts by the famous German Bauhaus architects and artists in Weimar, Dessau and Berlin between 1919 and 1933...

The Square Surrounded sashing block and strips belong to the Artful Crafts quilt and complement the setting of the blocks, but could very well be adjusted to any other block quilt. It is simple, yet creates a sophisticated overall design. The sashing blocks take up the layout of the sashing strip and introduce an on-point square which should be cut from fabric used in the other blocks in the quilt to create design harmony...

This easy block is a variation of the Log Cabin block and is based on a 9 by 9 grid. It consists of strips and corner blocks which allow a multitude of different colour settings. A dramatic and very tempting colour alternative would result if you used white and black for the strips and either multicoloured scraps or a striking colour for the squares… As with many “traditional” blocks, this block offers a huge potential for playing around... The Harlekin quilt is an example of an inverted world order of sorts: Whilst the main block, the Harlekin block described in the previous chapter, is a simple and quickly sewn block, the sashing in this quilt requires some major staying power. There is nothing difficult about the block as such, but making 120 identical Hourglass blocks does need more than a little forbearance.... (originally published on 16 February 2011)
