The Zambezi, a lifeline for approx. 32 million people, is the fourth-longest river in Africa, with just under 2,600 km. It originates in swampy moorland in the north-west of Zambia at a height of approx. 1,500 m.
The Yukon River originates in the Canadian province of British Columbia and then flows through the Yukon territory, before it flows into the Bering Sea after 3,210 km through a mostly uninhabited area in the northernmost U.S. state of Alaska.
The source area of the river is located in the Central Volcanic Plateau. From there, the Waikato flows into Lake Taupo, the largest lake in New Zealand, before plunging into deep gorges in a spectacular waterfall, the Huka Falls. In its further course, the river flows gently over fertile plains, the Waikato Plains, which had already been cultivated by the Maori and intensively used for agriculture. Even today many Maori families live in the Waikato region.
The River Thames flows from its source „Thames Head“ in Gloucestershire on a length of 346 km through southern England and connects London, the capital of Great Britain, with the North Sea.
The Río de la Plata (Spanish for Silver River) is the 290 km long and up to 220 km wide estuary of the great South American streams of the Río Paraná and Río Uruguay and forms the border between Argentina and Uruguay.
The Rio Bravo (Spanish for "Wild River"), which is called "Rio Grande" ("Large River") in the USA, is the third longest river in the USA, with a length of 3,034 km after the Missouri Mississippi and the Yukon River in Alaska.
With its length of 1,232 km, the Rhine is only the seventh-longest river in Europe, but it is one of the world‘s busiest waterways.
The river Po is the longest river in Italy with 652 km. It originates in the western Alps at the Italian-French border in the Valle Po, crosses northern Italy from west to east. South of Venice, the Po flows in the Adriatic Sea in the Mediterranean.
The Okavango, an approx. 1,700 km long river in southern Africa, originates in the highlands of Angola and empties into the marshland of the Okavango delta in the interior of Botswana, in the midst of one of the sandiest semi-desert areas of the planet - the Kalahari.
The Nile in Africa is the longest river in the world, with a length of 6,852 km. It is formed by two major spring rivers, the White Nile (Sudan and Ethiopia) and the Blue Nile, a very watery inlet from the Ethiopian Highlands. North of Khartoum, both rivers join and flow through Egypt to the mouth in the Mediterranean Sea north of Cairo.
