Enhanced Sawtooth

Enhanced Sawtooth

This easy, but still interesting block is based on a 3 by 3 grid which makes it effectively a Nine Patch block. It is made up of a total of 18 half-square triangles, which take a little patience and care to sew, accurately especially at the intersections., but otherwise is fairly easy.

Choose two contrasting colours for this block for maximum visual effect. There are numerous possibilities for setting the Enhanced Sawtooth block in a quilt. Here you can see three examples based on a 4 by 4 horizontal setting:

Also consider replacing the simple Sawtooth element (a block segment made up of two half-square triangles) in a larger quilt block with this enhanced version:

Cutting

For 2 blocks

  • Triangle A: Cut nine 2 7/8" (7.5 cm) squares from the dark fabrics. Cut the squares diagonally into two half-square triangles, making 18 dark triangles.
  • Triangle B: Cut nine 2 7/8" (7.5 cm) squares from the light fabrics. Cut the squares diagonally into two half-square triangles, making 18 light triangles.

Note:

If you only want to sew one block for the time being, only cut 5 squares for triangles A and B. You will have to discard one A and one B triangle as they won't be used for a single block.

Sewing

For 1 block

  • Sew one dark triangle A and one light triangle B together to make a 2.5" or 6.5 cm square (2" or 5 cm finished size).

Triangles A and B

  •  Make 3 AB squares.

Square AB

  •  Join two different A triangles to make one AA square of dark fabrics. Repeat twice to make three AA squares in total.
  • Repeat the last step for the light B triangles.
  • Lay out the AA, BB and AB squares as shown below:

Block Assembly 01

  • Join squares into rows:

Block Assembly 02

  • Iron seam allowances of the 1st and 3rd row towards the outer squares and towards the middle square for the 2nd row.
  • Join rows to make an Enhanced Sawtooth block.
