Nadelmalerei, ganz groß! (Embroidery par excellence!)

Wool, the material for large tapestries, textile pictures, cushions, furniture coverings and even trendy accessories, is the focus of this workshop. Wool embroidery using strong colours and thick threads builds the basis of not only impressive long-distance effects but also fascinating detail. A tour will give you an art history overview with emphasis on medieval tapestries, mainly crafted in the almost forgotten technique of couching (sometimes called convent stitch from the German Klosterstich). Afterwards participants will have the opportunity to learn couching, which is actually quite easy, and then to create a design for wool embroidery and begin to execute it. The workshop will be held (in German) by Dr. Tanja Kohwagner-Nikolai.
