Ocean Waves Quarter Block

Ocean Waves Quarter Block

For the diagonal setting in the Ocean Waves Quilt, not only are full blocks needed, but also side and corner blocks.

These instructions are for the four corner blocks. The blocks are triangular and equivalent to a quarter Ocean Waves block (if you were to cut it twice diagonally).

Finished size of the block

12" (30 cm) – quarter diagonal

Cutting

For 1 block

  • Triangle A’’: Cut one 5 1/8” (13.2 cm) square from the dark blue fabric. Cut the square diagonally once. For one block, you will only need one of the triangles.
  • Triangles B: Cut at least three 4 ¼” (11.1 cm) squares from the blue, turquoise and green fabrics. Cut each of these squares twice diagonally into four quarter-square triangles, making 12 B triangles. Cut more squares to achieve a greater colour variety and use extra squares/triangles for the other three corner blocks necessary to form a square or rectangle quilt top centre.

Sewing

For 1 block

Set out the block on your worktable as shown below. Arrange blue, turquoise and green triangles so that the same fabrics and/or colours don’t meet. Bear in mind that the blocks will be sewn together without any sashing. Therefore, make sure you also have a variety of fabrics on the outside of the block.
